Where Can I Use My Credits from StraighterLine vs. Study.com?
Both StraighterLine and Study.com offer the ability to transfer credits you earn from online courses to a number of top colleges and universities in pursuit of your degree. But how do we compare?
Study.com states that credits earned with them can be transferred to over 1,500 schools, but they only offer guaranteed transfer to a fraction of those — they only have 39 partner colleges. At StraighterLine, we have guaranteed course transfer agreements with over 150 partner colleges and universities, both public and private. In addition, there are nearly 2,000 schools outside our partner network that accept transfer credits from StraighterLine.
We partner with a variety of higher education institutions, so there’s something that works for all of our students. We have partnerships with state schools, community colleges, and entire university systems. Some of our partner schools exclusively offer online degrees, while others offer on-campus classes and programs.
But we don’t just have the options, we also have the data to back up these opportunities. Based on a 2018 survey of thousands of students who completed courses with us, 97% were successful in receiving transfer credit for a StraighterLine course.
Study.com vs. StraighterLine: Costs
One of the biggest concerns for most college students — whether they’re taking online or on-campus classes — is the cost of their tuition. It’s something we care about, too.
Study.com offers a monthly membership for $199, which includes access to unlimited courses, study tools, and proctored final exams.
Total costs for StraighterLine, however, come in at $178 — the price of a monthly membership ($99) plus the price of a course ($79). That's $21 less than taking a comparable course at Study.com.
Our monthly subscription also includes the flexibility to start or stop at any time and support materials such as eTextbooks, student support resources, tutoring, and transcripts.
Style of Learning at StraighterLine vs. Study.com
Every student is unique, and we all learn in different ways. It’s important to take into account the different teaching and learning styles you might encounter in courses from Study.com vs. StraighterLine.
Study.com has specifically designed their courses to accommodate busy schedules. They’ve constructed their courses in a micro-learning format, consisting of 5-7 minute lessons.
All of StraighterLine’s courses are self-paced to accommodate a variety of schedules. Students can move as quickly or as slowly through the course material as they’d like. Each course consists of a series of self-guided lessons and about 7 graded assessments (quizzes, exams, essays, etc.) as well as the final proctored exam.
StraighterLine’s courses are equivalent to what you’d experience on a college campus, in academic content and rigor. Plus, we want our students to succeed, so we offer 24/7 on-demand tutoring for all of our courses.
Most students complete one of our courses in 45 days, or even a month or less. That’s just about a third of the time spent on courses during a traditional, semester-long, in-person course.
StraighterLine vs. Study.com Course Approvals & Recommendations
Since neither StraighterLine nor Study.com are colleges in themselves that confer degrees, neither are accredited. That recognition is reserved for colleges and universities as they receive accreditation through a number of organizations authorized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Rather than accreditation, StraighterLine and Study.com have hundreds of courses that have been recommended as transferable to accredited institutions by a couple of different organizations.
200 of Study.com’s courses have been recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS).
All of StraighterLine’s courses have also received recommendations from ACE. Our only courses that have not been recommended for ACE Credit are our College Prep courses, but that’s because they’re non-credit courses.
Additionally, StraighterLine was selected for the U.S. Department of Education’s EQUIP Program. This program was an effort to allow students enrolled in nontraditional higher education programs access federal student aid to support their studies. It aimed to promote college access, affordability, and positive student outcomes.
